People affected by erosion in Roumari and Char Rajibpur upazilas of Kurigram besieged the deputy commissioner s office today demanding implementation of the four-point measure to prevent river erosion.
Around 50 people from Roumari and Char Rajibpur upazilas, which are isolated by the Brahmaputra river, went to the district town by boat and brought out a procession this afternoon to press home their demand.

A court in Kurigram today sentenced a man to death for killing his wife in Char Rajibpur upazila of the district.
Kurigram District and Sessions Judge s Court Judge Abdul Mannan passed the order around noon, our Lalmonirhat correspondent reports quoting the Judge Court s Public Prosecutor Abraham Lincoln.
According to the case statement, Bakul Miah of Rajibpur upazila, strangled his wife Shahina Begum following a dispute between them over his extramarital affair on December 2, 2007.
After killing Shahina, Bakul hanged the body and tried to show that his wife died by suicide but autopsy reports later revealed she was strangled to death.

Volunteers came to the rescue of char residents in Char Rajibpur and Roumari upazilas of Kurigram by building bamboo walk bridges on drying shallow channels of the Brahmaputra river.
Over the last one week, eight walk bridges were built in eight chars (river islands) in Char Rajibpur and Roumari upazilas and another 10 to 12 will be built soon, said Aminur Rahman, who took the primary initiative to help char residents continue communications over the crisscrossing channels in and between the chars.
