Share Via Email   |  A+A A- By Express News Service BHUBANESWAR: Five criminals snatched a gold chain from a retired district judge in the Capital city in broad daylight on Wednesday. Police said the victim had visited Kharavela Nagar to purchase a spare part of an air conditioner when the miscreants waylaid his car, forcibly opened the door of the vehicle and snatched his chain. They ran away from the spot after committing the crime at around 1.20 pm. Sources said all the accused are natives of Mali Sahi. Kharavela Nagar police immediately launched a search operation, detained the miscreants and also recovered the chain. The city has been witnessing a rise in the incidents of robbery.

Volunteers distribute food among homeless people in Bhubaneswar BHUBANESWAR: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) will start the vaccination drive for inmates of shelters for the urban homeless (SUH) from the centre located at Chandrasekharpur here Friday. The city has eight SUHs under BMC jurisdiction. These are located at Malisahi, Ganganagar, Chandrasekharpur, Ghatikia, Bhimpur, Baramunda, Ashok Nagar and Unit-III (Kharavela Nagar). These shelters have 368 beds and 80% of them are occupied by beneficiaries, official sources said. The Unit-III SUH has the highest capacity. It can accommodate 100 people, while the Baramunda centre has only 12 beds. Bhimpur and Malisahi SUH centres can accommodate 28 people each, while Ganganagar, Chandrasekharpur, Ghatikia and Ashok Nagar centres have 50 beds each.

Earlier, four persons, including three GST officials and an employee of a private university here, were arrested for their alleged involvement in the case. “The FIR has been lodged against some employees of GST and Central Excise audit commissionerate and the private university. Further probe is on to ascertain the involvement of others,” said a CBI officer.

The accused, Umakanta Rout was earlier working with IT department in the Capital as a peon. He used to demand money from businessmen in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar by impersonating himself as a senior officer of the IT department and threatened them of dire consequences if they did not agree to pay the amount.
