Senate oks 7 bills renaming, converting schools
The Senate today adopted on third and final reading seven local bills that seek to rename State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) as well as convert state colleges into state universities.
Senator Joel Villanueva, chair of the Committee on Higher and Technical-Vocational Education, expressed his gratitude to the body for the swift passage of the seven bills, saying these measures would uplift the academic communities in the various SUCs. The passage on third reading of these local bills renaming our SUCs and converting colleges into state universities in the middle of the pandemic is timely, relevant and also uplifting to the communities who will stand to benefit from these developments. This is definitely a good news for our people in Abra Agusan del Sur, Basilan, Camarines Sur, Davao de Oro, Occidental Mindoro, and Surigao del Sur, Villanueva said.

DAVAO CITY – Five fishermen from the province of Sarangani were rescued after floating off the open sea for more than a day.
Authorities identified the rescued fishermen as Yolando Gino, 55 years old; Preceliano Cong, 31; Arnil Sulas, 28; Ronie Gino, 30; and Gilbert Castanares, 42.
Based on the report from Mati City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), the five fishermen went to Baganga town in Davao Oriental for business on May 13 onboard their fishing vessel with two attached light boats.
On the same date, the fishermen sailed back to Sarangani unaware of the incoming Tropical Storm Crising. They were already in the middle of the sea when they received the warning.
