While the wait is on for the local landing of the first linesiders, anglers are preoccupying themselves with pretty good freshwater fishing. For those who are counting the days until there is inshore salty action, birds on bait are a harbinger of things to come!

A COUPLE have described the scary moment their puppy became stuck in a river after chasing a bird. Peter and Judith Young were walking their young springer spaniel Luna on the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve at about 8am on Sunday morning when she bounded off after a seagull. Her owners could only watch as she sped off before falling several metres into the river Rother. Peter said: The river was at low tide so it was some five or six metres below us and we couldn’t reach her. It was a scary moment while we waited for assistance. Peter contacted the coastguard and RNLI Rye Harbour crew members arrived to rescue the poor pup.
The town appears in a list of UK coastal towns, as part of a survey by Which?
It asked its members to rate the beach, attractions, scenery, value for money for nearly 100 seaside towns.
More than 4,000 visitors told Which? about their recent UK trips to seaside towns, villages and resorts.
Which? said 30 of British destinations named were awarded four or five stars for peace and quiet.
Rye, which appeared seventh in the list, was awarded five stars for attractions and four stars for scenery, peace and quiet and value for money.
Its customer score was 81 per cent.
However, Rye is two miles from the sea at the merging of the Rother, Tillingham and Brede rivers.
