In November 1971, a debut novel from a young author was published, to a small but not insignificant splash. Set in a world of tiny people who live in a carpet, it was described by the book trade journal Smithâs Trade News as âone of the most original totsâ tomes to hit the bookshops for many a decadeâ, while Teachersâ News called it a story of âquite extraordinary qualityâ.
The unknown author was Terry Pratchett, and the book was The Carpet People. This week, publisher Penguin Random House Childrenâs is releasing a 50th-anniversary edition, with Doctor Who and Good Omens star David Tennant reading the new audiobook.

Kiddy Lad Ada Woodhouse as Santa, touring the streets of Kidderminster. Photo by Daniel Bragg/Advertiser and Shuttle Camera Club A SOCIAL media personality from Kidderminster has stepped up to the plate - or in this case, the sleigh - to give local children a chance to see Santa this Christmas. After hearing that local sleigh tours had been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, Adam Woodhouse ordered a £90 Santa s suit from Amazon and turned his expertise building campervans to making a sleigh. Known best by his social media followers as Kiddy Lad, Adam is halfway through a seven-day tour of Kidderminster and Stourport, which has seen hundreds of people each night lining the streets to catch a glimpse of Santa Claus.
