The Commandery in Worcester will welcome back visitors from Tuesday May 18. The museum, a Grade I listed building, is home to exhibitions about key periods in the city s history, including the Battle of Worcester in 1651. The city council said that changes have been made to ensure that visitors feel safe and welcome, including one-way routes, extra cleaning, hand sanitising stations and cashless payments. To celebrate the reopening, a brand-new touring exhibition ‘British Wildlife Photography Awards Retrospective Exhibition’ will take place in the gardens from May 18 to Thursday June 17. It is a chance to get up close and personal with all creatures great and small through a series of stunning, award-winning photographs. Exhibition entry is included with a Commandery entry ticket or season pass.
It is one of 26 historical portraits donated in 1850 by Rev George Downing Bowles. This group of paintings were the museum’s first coherent group of artworks – like many museums at the time, the popular subject for curators was natural history rather than fine art – and so this collection marked the very beginnings of the Museum’s interest in art and art history. Nowadays, they are arguably the most significant part of Worcester’s Fine Art collection and are certainly some of the oldest artworks in its care. Prince Rupert, or Rupert of the Rhine, was born in Prague on December 17 1619, the younger son of Elizabeth ‘Winter Queen’ of Bohemia and a nephew of King Charles I.

A CITY swan project is urging people to feed the swans whilst out on their daily exercise. According to The Swan Food Project the protected birds are more hungry than usual due to the high river levels meaning they have to work harder swim in the strong current. A spokesman for the project said: Do take some food with you when you go for your riverside walk. It takes such a lot of energy to swim in this strong current. If you re buying bread for them, buy seeded bread. It has more of the nutrients they need. It takes longer to digest, so they don t get hungry again as quickly.
