Bombay HC directs CBI to conduct preliminary inquiry against Anil Deshmukh

Mumbai: The Bombay High Court on Monday directed CBI to conduct preliminary inquiry in to corruption allegations against Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh. ‘CBI inquiry shall be completed in 15 days, then CBI Director can decide the further course of action in accordance with law’, ordered the bench in a PIL filed by former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh and three other similar petitions.
On Wednesday, a division bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice GS Kulkarni reserved its order on the petitions, following marathon arguments on admission, interim reliefs and the State’s objection to the petition’s maintainability. The Bombay High Court has observed that the allegations made by former Mumbai Police Commissioner Parambir Singh against the Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh are of a serious nature , which warrant a preliminary enquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation. Prima facie, the issues are such that the very faith of citizens in the functioning of the police department is at stake , observed a bench comprising Chief Justice Dipankar Dutta and Justice GS Kulkarni, while disposing of PILs filed by Parambir Singh, Dr.Jaishri Laxmanrao Patil, Ghanshyam Upadhyay and Mohan Prabhakar Bhide. A team of CBI sleuths from Delhi will reach Mumbai on Tuesday to record the statement of Dr Jaishri Patil on whose petition the Bombay High Court directed CBI to conduct a preliminary probe into allegations of corruption and misuse of official position by former Home Minister Anil Deshmukh.
Following High Court s direction, Deshmukh stepped down from the post on Tuesday.
