Ducks and geese are slowly starting to make their way south into Kansas thanks to recent cold fronts.
The Kansas Wildlife, Parks and Tourism Commission met in person for the first time in more than a year June 17 at the Great Plains Nature Center in Wichita to make several notable changes in regulations for Kansas hunters.
The commission unanimously approved several new regulations on select public wildlife areas in hopes of easing overcrowding issues for waterfowl hunters after receiving public feedback.
Kansas walleye Initiative Leads to Higher Survival Rate
PRATT – In March, Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWPT) fisheries biologists and other staff collected nearly 100 million walleye eggs. Thanks to the Kansas Walleye Initiative, a record percentage of the walleye and saugeye hatched from those eggs will likely end up on the hooks of Kansas anglers.
“We’ve been having some great success, and the program is only four or five years old,” said Scott Waters, KDWPT fisheries biologist and chairman of the walleye committee. “It’s already leading to more catchable walleye.”
The program began in 2015, with meetings between fisheries biologists and a variety of researchers and hatchery staff. Waters was also quick to thank the Kansas Wildlife, Parks and Tourism Commission for ongoing support for the program.

One of my best friends (Junior) just loves to hear the story of the turkey I killed in 2011. I’m sure he finds it very humorous.
I started opening day 10 miles northeast of Woodston. The night before season, I had roosted seven long beards. The boss tom was noticeably much bigger than the other six. He spent most of his time running off the other toms anytime they got close to his hens.
It was a typical opening morning, starting out really cold but gradually warming up. They all flew down, and just as the night before, the boss tom spent his time chasing the other toms away from the hens.
