Jeopardized by the complex developments of local COVID-19 outbreaks, Vietnamese immigrants in Cambodia are bracing immense risk to repatriate by swimming across An Giang Province’s Binh Di River, which separates Vietnam and Cambodia.
The phenomenon was confirmed by Lieutenant Colonel Dinh Quang Diem, head of border guard at Long Binh Border Gate, An Phu District, An Giang Province, on Tuesday.
The border post has detected 30 cases of people swimming their way into Vietnam in the past few months, the majority of whom are Vietnamese immigrants who moved to Cambodia for job opportunities.

COVID-19 testing
for Vietnamese citizens returning from abroad so as to prevent illegal entry,
Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam made the request during an in-person and
online meeting with HCM City and 10 localities bordering Cambodia on April 23.
Noting that COVID-19 is
wreaking havoc in Cambodia and other countries in the region, Dam, who is head
of the National Steering Committee on COVID-19 Prevention and Control, urged
the localities to tighten regulations, especially sparing no efforts in
tackling illegal entry via road and maritime transport.
