Cold weather is boosting ice-fishing fortunes!
Favorable temperatures are having a corresponding effect on anglers’ ice-fishing fortunes as bigger lakes are finally beginning to catch. There is even word that at least one of Maine’s iconic smelt camps expects to be in business by next week!

Jim from AJs Bait in Meredith said that almost overnight additional parts of Lake Winnipesaukee are locking up. The latest is Meredith Bay, where shanties and even a tractor (tasked with clearing snow for hockey) have been observed on the ice! Most everything that swims in this big lake can be caught in Meredith Bay. Anglers are catching lakers and white perch in Center Harbor and there are reports of 5 inches of ice in the Long Island stretch on the right-hand side of the bridge. Regarding other water bodies, most of Newfound Lake has been good as has at least the north end of Winnisquam where anglers
I remember a long time ago, maybe 2007, we had a wicked bad ice storm more or less all throughout New England. At the time, I lived in Salem (New Hampshire the one with Canobie Lake, not the witches yes, I m going to make that joke every time I mention Salem, so buckle in), and my grandparents lived the next street over.
The ice storm was so bad that A LOT of people lost power, including my grandparents. Thankfully, maybe because we were on a different circuit/power grid because of our apartment building, we never lost power. So my Mom and I scooped up my grandparents and had them stay with us.

A long-eared owl was photographed at Canobie Lake on Dec. 6.
Four tundra swans were reported from Great Bay on Dec. 5 and a redhead was reported from Great Bay on the 3rd.
A male Barrowâs goldeneye was seen in Mile Long Pond in the Androscoggin River in Errol on Nov. 30, and one was seen on Lake Winnisquam on Dec. 6.
A black scoter was seen on Spofford Lake in Chesterfield on Dec. 2.
