Connecticut Repertory Theatre Pivots to Livestream Shows Thanks to Donors Even the pandemic couldn t keep the show from going on UConn’s Connecticut Repertory Theatre performance of Men on Boats went virtual this fall. Copy Link When the pandemic suddenly brought the curtain down on UConn’s Connecticut Repertory Theatre (CRT) last spring, faculty and staff had to figure out how to pivot to virtual performances. It was a pricey technological challenge. They had to buy laptops, software, monitors, green screens, microphones, and ring lights, and then ship it all to students so they could perform remotely from home. Luckily, the theatre was able to tap into several UConn Foundation philanthropic funds – including the Hewitt Fund, the Nafe Katter fund, and the CRT Patrons Fund – to cover the $25,000 cost. Without the support of donors, this would be very difficult because of the significant loss of ticket revenue.

From the archives: Say Hi, neighbor, meet family talent

BY JOANNE GRECO ROCHMAN | REPUBLICAN-AMERICAN April 14, 2021 BY JOANNE GRECO ROCHMAN | REPUBLICAN-AMERICAN The Republican-American is saying farewell to our long-time theater columnist and critic Joanne Greco Rochman. To salute Rochman, here is a classic column from Dec. 13, 201 that illustrates her approach to the Connecticut theater scene. She did not know that I was a critic and I did not know anything about her.

April 7, 2021 BY NANCY SASSO JANIS | REPUBLICAN-AMERICAN STORRS –The Connecticut Repertory Theatre, in conjunction with the Human Rights Institute/Dodd Impact, is presenting a virtual performance of Sophocles’ “Antigone.” CONTRIBUTED This unique production was both adapted and directed by Gary M. English. The Greek tragedy offers a heart-wrenching portrait of a young woman and her refusal to sacrifice her principles when she is ordered to meet questionable but legal demands of a state in crisis. The theater’s production takes a contemporary look at the conflict between two points of view regarding the rights and responsibilities of citizens. In this tale of a fractured family, the characters navigate an ethereal world where issues of gender, race, violence and trauma are woven through this often political discussion.
