Norwich preschools receive literary residency program
Staff Report
The Connecticut Storytelling Center announced foundational support for its work to promote literacy in area preschools through a literary residency program.
The Charter Oak Credit Union and the Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut are supporting the center’s Littlest Listeners program in Norwich. In this residency program, CSC’s teaching artists make repeat visits to the classroom, utilizing the arts as a tool to improve listening, speaking and visualizing skills, the first three components of literacy. Storytellers have transitioned to live, virtual programs for this school year, and the response has been positive.

Norwich After losing about 90% of his live performance gigs in 2020 and scheduled to do an online New Year’s Eve program, folk singer and songwriter Tom Callinan struggled for weeks with just how to sum up 2020 in song.
Then, on Tuesday, Dec. 22, he stood for two hours on a frozen, windswept hillside outside Masonicare in Wallingford for an outdoor performance for residents. He returned to his Norwich home, thawed out for a day and “the logjam in my mind loosened,” he said.
He wrote, “Good Riddance to 2020,” that Wednesday morning, as he was rehearsing for a New Year’s Eve online performance for Addison Place assisted living facility in Glastonbury.
