Case pendency in Supreme Court rises by 4 3 per cent

NEW DELHI: The wheels of justice at India’s top court is seemed to be clogging with the pendency of cases reaching an all time high of almost 68,000. There is a steep rise in pending cases especially during the period of January 2021 till May 2021.  In 2020, there was rise of pendency of 1.4% and in 2019 it was 1.7%. But in 2021, there is rise in cases by 4.3%. Though the Supreme Court worked more during the Covid-19 restrictions than what it does in normal years, still the pendency has touched an all time high. The main reason for the high pendency is the restricted physical hearings and shifting the whole judicial work online. In the beginning only important cases were taken up for hearing but gradually miscellaneous cases too were taken up.

Will Uttar Pradesh s population bill have penal provision, ask experts

NEW DELHI: A draft bill on population control prepared by Uttar Pradesh State Law Commission proposes to make people with more than two children ineligible for government jobs, disentitle those already in service to promotions and exclude them from the benefits of 77 schemes. Legal experts says it needs to be seen whether the bill, if passed, will have penal provisions in case of any violation. The draft bill also suggests incentives such as tax rebates for those with two or less children. There has been a clamour for population-control laws, even though experts say coercive policies will not have the desired effect. In Assam, a law similar to the one that the UP Law Commission has proposed is already in place.

Social media by no means altruistic, can polarise public debates: Supreme Court

Express News Service NEW DELHI: Stressing the importance of social media, the Supreme Court on Thursday said such platforms have become power centres unto themselves, having the ability to influence vast sections of opinions. Dealing with a plea related to the summons issued to Facebook by the Delhi Assembly’s Peace and Harmony Committee in connection with Delhi riots, a bench of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Dinesh Maheshwari and Hrishikesh Roy commented, “Facebook has the power of not simply a hand but a fist, gloved as it may be. They cannot wash their hands of the issue as this is their very business. Their role is not as innocuous as they are seeking to contend,” the court said with of Facebook’s role in Delhi riots.
