Unacceptable on our roadways : WRPS issue 840 charges during Canada Road Safety Week

21 impaired operation related charges 360 other charges laid include Criminal Code offences, Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act charges, and other Highway Traffic Act offences, including improper turns, failing to stop for a school bus and unsafe lane changes. “During Canada Road Safety Week, WRPS focused on targeting the Fatal Four offences – which is impaired driving, distracted driving, aggressive driving, and not wearing a seatbelt,” Chief Bryan Larkin said in the release. “What we witnessed was a lack of regard for other road users and unsafe driving behaviours that are unacceptable on our roadways. This was a disappointing result, but shows our commitment to continue to hold those accountable who put others at risk.”

More than 1,600 charges laid by Central Region OPP: Canada Road Safety Week

SHARE ON: Photo credit: @OPP HSD on Twitter The Central Region OPP is reporting 1,673 driving-related charges in the region over Canada Road Safety Week. During the week, officers were on the lookout for the “Big Four” factors of collisions, which are speeding, impaired driving, distracted driving, and seatbelt compliance. Speeding accounted for 1,376 charges, improper use of seatbelts 162, impaired driving 35, and distracted driving 32. No fatal collisions were reported during the week.  This year’s numbers are lower than last year’s Canada Road Safety Week, which totaled 1,819 charges. Central Region OPP’s Gosia Puzio says lower numbers might point to the success of stay-at-home orders.
