ZAMBIA: Bishop Phiri Bans Politicians from Campaigning in Churches By Njoki Githinji NDOLA, JUNE 4, 2021(CISA)-Rt. Rev. Benjamin Phiri bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Ndola has issued a decree that all politicians who visit churches during the campaign period should neither be given preferential treatment nor a chance to address faithful during Mass, or within church premises. “As political campaigns heighten, we surely expect an increase of visits of those seeking election to various political offices to our churches… I therefore direct that when such visits occur, those seeking political offices should be treated as any other ordinary Christian coming to worship. At no time should they be accorded a chance to speak to the gathered faithful during Mass at the pulpit nor should they be given audience outside Mass to speak to the parishioners within the parish premises,” he said in a June 3 Memo.

ZAMBIA: Ndola Diocese Introduces Fresh Liturgical Guidelines amid Second Wave of Covid-19 By Njoki Githinji NDOLA, FEBRUARY 2, 2021 (CISA)-Catholic Churches in the Catholic Diocese of Ndola have been directed to reduce daily Masses to at least twice a week, observe health guidelines, only have communion helpers when it is very necessary and according to the number of congregants at Mass and hold adoration of the Blessed Sacrament monthly until further notice as directed by the Bishop Benjamin Phiri, ordinary of Ndola. In a January 29 memo, Bishop Phiri directed Radio Icengelo to resume live streaming of daily Masses on radio and Facebook as the country battles a second wave of Covid-19.

Konkola Copper Mines – a subsidiary of the UK-based mining giant Vedanta – has been polluting the main water source of surrounding villages in Chingola, in Zambia’s Copperbelt Province, and leaving a trail of human rights and environmental abuses for nearly two decades. A legal action, brought by more than 2,500 Zambian villagers, including 643 children, against Konkola Copper Mines Plc and Vedanta Resources Limited, has settled out of court, it was announced today (19 January) in a joint statement from the mining companies and Leigh Day, the English law firm representing the claimants. ActionAid Zambia works closely with communities in the Chingola area through its partner, the Catholic Diocese of Ndola. This work provides a platform and resources to support villagers to claim their rights and advocate for regulation of corporate conduct through progressive policies and legislation.
