The Lehrer Report: March 5, 2021

The Lehrer Report: March 5, 2021 Monday, March 08, 2021 Print I  don’t think I will complain too much about my electric bill given the prices in Texas. Orchard Valley, where I live, was built with all-electric homes. Over the decades I have had energy audits, had storm windows installed, added insulation in the attic, switched light bulbs, put in heavier window shades and added solar panels to keep costs reasonable. I hang laundry outside.   Also, for many years I have set the thermostats at 50 degrees. (Each room has a thermostat.) And I am comfortable. When I go to people’s houses with higher thermostat settings, I am too hot.  I turn on the heat on Nov. 15 and shut it off March 15. This November was a gift. I didn’t need heat until Thanksgiving.

Around Amherst: Black Oral History project revived

Around Amherst: Black Oral History project revived By SCOTT MERZBACH AMHERST A project to document the history and experiences of African-American residents in Amherst, in part through interviews and oral recollections, is resuming in February after nearly a year’s hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Demetria Rougeaux Shabazz, a lecturer in film, media and cultural studies at the University of Massachusetts, Jones Library Archivist Cynthia Harbeson and Amherst Media are restarting the project supported by a Massachusetts Cultural Council grant. “The Black Oral History project aims to preserve the volumes of wisdom and knowledge that our elders carry, how they were resilient in the face of anti-black racism during their lives,” Shabazz said. “It is my hope that their words may instruct, strengthen and revive us as we wage the fight for a better world.”

The Lehrer Report: Feb 5, 2021

The Lehrer Report: Feb. 5, 2021 Monday, February 08, 2021 Print I did it. I signed up get the vaccine. I followed the directions and went on line at 11 a.m. as requested. I can see why there are issues. The sign-up required a photo or download of the insurance card. Dismay, I don’t know how to download. I have never done it. Fortunately , one could take a photo. For those who register over the phone, I assume a photo would not be required. I have friends in other states where it took hours just to connect. I will still wear my mask, keep my distance and use a lot of hand lotion with all the hand washing.
