A proposed 207-unit development off Northwest 60th Avenue was denied by the Marion County Commission on Tuesday after an hour-long debate about controlling sprawl in the county s designated urban growth area versus the need to protect farm land.
The commission voted 3-2 to deny development of the land, which is surrounded mostly by 450 acres known as Piney Woods Farm, owned by the family of retired Marion County Circuit Judge Hale Stancil, 75, who pleaded with officials to deny the development.
Commissioners Michelle Stone, who represents that area of the county, and Kathy Bryant voted for approval of the development, which was proposed to be built on the west edge of four-lane Northwest 60th Avenue, across from the Ocala Palms retirement community.
The pandemic effect
The three justice system officials told the County Commission last week that they need financial assistance to cut through the pandemic-related case backlog.
According to figures provided to commissioners by the Public Defender s Office, from March 20, 2020 to March 21, 2021, the number of pending felony cases increased 55 percent. For misdemeanors it was a 304 percent boost, and juveniles cases are up 75 percent. We did everything to move cases along, Graves told commissioners. But with jury trials canceled for a year (they restarted last month) and many hearings delayed, as well, there was only so much his office could do.
Graves said his lawyers are still approximately 2,000 cases behind.
Commissioners Kathy Bryant and Michelle Stone voted against the deal, which passed 3-2 on Tuesday.

Bryant s main complaint is that the rent increase isn t appropriate for two governments that are supposed to be working together – especially on important issues like public safety.
The lease allows county paramedics and EMTs to use two bunk rooms and a supply area. They also can use common areas, such as the kitchen, workout room and showers/restrooms, but only subject to availability and after coordinating with an Ocala Fire Rescue captain. We should be doing this as a partnership. We are working in partnership; we re providing services to the citizens of Marion County, Bryant said at Tuesday s commission meeting. And it certainly doesn t cost them $1,180 a month for us to be in two offices as a place where our guys can go to sleep in the middle of the night when they re not running calls.
