Repair work to restart on key Kendal bridge next month Victoria Bridge Repair work to secure the long term future of Victoria Bridge in Kendal are set to resume in May – two months earlier than originally planned. Cumbria County Council is carrying out permanent repair work on the bridge, which is vital infrastructure in Kendal’s road network, and Story Contracting is the main contractor for the project. The scheme is designed to strengthen the bridge supports and foundation, making the structure more resilient to future flood events. Work consists of a concrete apron around the pier and abutment foundations as well as hardening of an invert in the riverbed under each bridge span to protect from future scouring.

Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership’s Careers Hub, Speakers for Schools and local employers hosted a Virtual Insight Day series at The Queen Katherine School in Kendal, providing a high-quality virtual experience of the world of work. Taking place between March 22 and March 26, each of the five days focused on a different sector, giving students in years 10 and 11 a range of career insights. The sessions were interactive, with plenty of opportunities for students to engage and get their questions answered.

Network Rail delivers £116M of upgrades over the Easter weekend More than 600 projects were undertaken on the UK rail network over the four day Easter weekend including two bridge pushes to upgrade an underpass below the Chiltern main line at Bicester. The £12.3M scheme involved moving two precast concrete underpasses, weighing up to 1,600t, into position below the rail line to reduce traffic congestion in Bicester as part of a project for Homes England, Oxfordshire County Council and Cherwell District Council. After removing 400m of track, engineers from Story Contracting and Network Rail excavated 21,000t of ground from the embankment the precast units were moved into position using a Mammoet self-propelled modular transporter.
