Meet three CQ students in line for a top resources honour

The winner of the Exceptional Female QMEA Student Award will be announced in front of an expected 1000-strong crowd at the QRC/Women in Mining and Resources Queensland (WIMARQ) awards at an International Women’s Day breakfast in Brisbane on 10 March. Caitlin Boothby from Biloela State High School, Chloe Coombe from The Cathedral College in Rockhampton and Charlise Falconer from Gladstone s Chanel College will vie for the honour of being recognised as exceptional among their peers. QRC chief executive Ian Macfarlane said the future had never been brighter for women who wished to pursue a career in Queensland’s world-leading resources sector.

Gregory Sierra, Actor on Barney Miller and Sanford and Son, Dies at 83

Gregory Sierra, who endeared himself to 1970s sitcom fans as the genial Julio Fuentes on  Sanford and Son and the impassioned Sgt. Miguel Chano Amenguale on  Barney Miller, has died. He was 83. Sierra died Jan. 4 in Laguna Woods, California, after a battle with cancer, family spokesman Rick Voll told The Hollywood Reporter. A native of New York s Spanish Harlem, Sierra also made a memorable appearance as a radical Jewish vigilante in Archie Is Branded, a 1973 episode of CBS   All in the Family that was one of the sitcom s most jarring episodes. And he played Carlos El Puerco Valdez, a Malaguayan counter-revolutionist who kidnaps Jessica (Katherine Helmond) on ABC s

Photo: Contributed “That’s a crazy length in a tournament where each game is 30 minutes plus an extra 30 seconds per move made. “I was offered a draw in that game, around move 40, but felt I could win and over-pressed.” Justin said three of the six games he played were the last to finish, with another of them also lasting more than two hours.

Premium Content Subscriber only A former dux of The Cathedral College is one of only two international players competing in the Valencia Open Chess Tournament in Spain. Justin Turner has had two wins, two draws and two losses in the six games he has played so far at the event, which started on December 26 and runs to December 30. Based on International Chess Federation rankings, he is ranked 38th of the 50 entrants. Justin will play a total of 10 games at the tournament, which is in the standard format of long games, with a minimum of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds for each move made.

The cases were from across the Central Queensland region.   1) PRE-PUBESCENT TEEN BRIBED FOR SEX, FORTNIGHTLY FOR YEARS A ROCKHAMPTON girl was subjected to fortnightly unprotected sex for three years, when she was aged 11-14, after being preyed upon by her uncle at age 10. The uncle, 46, was sentenced in Rockhampton District Court in November after pleading guilty to maintaining a sexual relationship with a child, two counts of indecent treatment of a child and two of carnal knowledge.
