Open Door Mission employees share moments leading up to RPD shooting

Created: March 11, 2021 04:36 PM ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC)  Typically when someone comes to the Open Door Mission seeking help, they’re asked to complete a thorough registration process. When they arrive, they ll ring the doorbell, we ll bring them in, we ll stop them at the front desk, we ll get their info,” Ramon Cintron, director of community services for Rochester’s Open Door Mission, said. “So name, date of birth, and we ll get them registered in our system, which also includes a picture for our database. That process was not completed early Wednesday morning when an unidentified man came in. Open Door Mission staff members say the man did not give them enough time to complete the standard registration process.

Here s why Person in Crisis team wasn t sent on Open Door Mission call

The newly formed Person in Crisis team, a team of social workers who handle calls involving mental health distress in place of law enforcement, has responded to less than 100 calls since its launch 50 days ago, a city official said during an oversight hearing Thursday night. Daniele Lyman Torres, the commissioner of the Department of Youth and Human Resources who oversees the program, said during a presentation to the Rochester Police Accountability Board that the program is in its infancy and is limited in the types of calls it responds to. The team, which falls under the city s Crisis Intervention Services, is staffed by 14 emergency response social workers working in teams of two. The team is available around the clock, but is only staffed by one two-person team during any given shift.
