While similarly-lackluster Q2 2020 results could have been attributed to the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic a year ago, third-quarter 2020 performance made it clear that Chevy’s pony car is simply being outmuscled (pun intended) by the Challenger and Mustang. The pattern continued during the Q4 2020, Q1 2021, and now Q2 2021, and is being exacerbated by very low inventory / dealer supply as a result of the ongoing microchip shortage, which has impacted the GM Lansing Grand River plant where the Camaro is made. The poor performance could make it tough for GM to continue making a business case for the vehicle, though there have been hints that The General could extend the sunset date of the sixth-gen Camaro thru 2026.
