Gulf Power welcomes first Okaloosa solar trees at HarborWalk Village

Special to Gannett/USA TODAY NETWORK DESTIN  A blue sky and abundant sunshine made for a perfect day for Gulf Power to officially welcome Okaloosa County’s first solar trees to HarborWalk Village in Destin during a ceremonial untying of a green ribbon on Thursday. Instead of the traditional cutting of a red ribbon, a green ribbon was used to represent sustainability and will be used again as other solar trees and canopies are welcomed throughout Northwest Florida. Legendary developer and CEO Peter Bos joined the city of Destin, Okaloosa County, Destin Chamber of Commerce and Gulf Power officials on the HarborWalk Village dock where the two solar trees have been planted under the zip line.

Gulf Power Foundation, Pensacola Habitat provide weatherizing, repair

Special to Gannett/USA TODAY NETWORK PENSACOLA Pensacola Habitat for Humanity (PHH) recently received a $100,000 grant from the Gulf Power Foundation, which also partnered with them for the new Pensacola Habitat for Humanity Weatherization and Repair Assistance Program (WRAP) that launched May 17. This new program will allow Pensacola Habitat to make weatherization and emergency repair assessments for Gulf Power customers who meet the qualifications for WRAP, and help those homeowners in making some of those repairs. “Pensacola Habitat is known for our leadership in addressing the community’s affordable housing needs. Partnering with an amazing community organization such as the Gulf Power Foundation is a crucial step in continuing our commitment to ensure safe and affordable housing options for our community.” said Sam Young, CEO of Pensacola Habitat for Humanity.

Garcon Point Bridge toll suspension further extended Special to Gannett/USA TODAY NETWORK TALLAHASSEE  Pursuant to Executive Order 21-104, Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Secretary Kevin J. Thibault, P.E. has directed Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise (FTE) to further extend the toll suspension for the Garcon Point Bridge. Tolls are now suspended on the Garcon Point Bridge through Sunday, June 6, 2021. The extension allows the Garcon Point Bridge to continue serving as a temporary detour route while the Pensacola Bay Bridge is being repaired from damage sustained during Hurricane Sally. Details on the detour routes, including graphics, FAQs, and regular updates can be found online at fdot.gov/PensacolaBay. Members of the public wishing to receive these updates can choose to subscribe by providing their email address on this website as well.
