Forest officials announced they would burn about 30 acres in coming weeks near the Mirror Lake Highway to preserve one of the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache Forest’s only native Ponderosa Pine stands.
Crews will torch thick undergrowth near the pines, including juniper and lodgepole pines, according to a prepared statement from the U.S. Forest Service. The stand is near the highway east of Kamas between the Lower Provo overlook and the Soapstone Basin turnoff. The goal is to preserve the genetic diversity of the trees and reduce the risk of wildfire near the roadway.
It is one of several projects happening in the forest that aim to reduce the risk of wildfires or improve the health of rivers.

Glamping will be welcomed to the Uinta Mountains this summer for the first time, with a dozen campsites near the Mirror Lake Highway slated to offer luxurious accommodations with beds, furniture and rugs.
“It’s glamorous camping,” said Zuzana Smith, assistant general manager of the Utah Recreation Company, which is providing the service. “If you don’t have all the equipment and still want to camp outdoors, we offer the tent and it’s fully furnished.”
She said that campers would be asked to bring their own bedding and clothes, but that they would arrive at a campsite with a heavy-duty canvas tent already set up that includes two full-size beds, chairs, ottomans and lanterns.

The Mirror Lake Highway sees more than two million visitors annually, offering the promise of an escape into nature for sight-seers, hikers and campers alike.
But at one of its most popular trailheads and parking areas, solitude can seem hard to find, with parked cars overflowing sometimes a mile or more and improvised parking spots heading into the underbrush.
U.S. Forest Service officials recently announced plans to revamp the Crystal Lake trailhead, more than doubling the size of the parking lot, providing a designated area for search and rescue personnel and improving miles of nearby trails.
