Another large N.J. school district says no classrooms until April due to COVID-19

Public school students in Elizabeth will not return to classrooms until April 12, the K-12 district announced Monday.
It was the latest setback for in-person instruction in Elizabeth, one of the state’s largest school districts, where students have been learning from home since last March due to the coronavirus pandemic.
While the state’s seven-day average for new confirmed COVID-19 positive tests had declined by 15 % as of Monday, Schools Superintendent Olga Hugelmeyer told parents that the positivity rate in northern New Jersey remains too high to justify returning to classrooms.

If all goes as planned, students in Trenton public schools who haven’t seen the inside of a classroom since mid-March due to the coronavirus will be back for in-person learning in May. But even then, they’ll only get no more than 14 days actually in school under a plan to reopen the buildings under a hybrid schedule.
