Maddy Newcombe is only 8 but already she s making a name for herself on the national BMX stage - and having Rotorua s new international-standard track on her doorstop is a massive bonus. Qualifying first in the finals after winning six motos at the BMX National Championships in Rotorua at the weekend, the little ripper was tipped to take out first place.

UP: To the Vienna Public Library beginning a home delivery service, which is available to library patrons with senior account status and the Vienna zip code 26105. “We are excited to launch this valuable service to help people who might be anxious to leave their homes, or find it difficult to get to the library for curbside pickup,” said Megan Dowler, adult services coordinator. “We will strive to ensure safe, contactless delivery of all library materials.” That is fantastic news for Vienna book-lovers still trying to stay safe.
UP: To the YMCA of Parkersburg and the United Way Alliance of the Mid-Ohio Valley, who teamed up to donate supplies for the Birthday Bag Outreach Program that gives birthday party supplies to local families in need. We don’t always think of all the little things families must sacrifice to try to save money. This program is a wonderful way to put a smile on kids’ faces, particularly during this challenging year.

UP: To a planned new kayak launch at Spencer’s Park in Vienna. Mayor Randy Rapp says the development will spark other plans at the park, such as a walking trail. “I think it’s going to be exciting,” he said. Recreational opportunities and developments such as this one are a fantastic addition for our community, and a draw to those interested in exploring the area.
UP: To Cecelia Fatta of Parkersburg High School, Nicholas Murphy of Parkersburg South High School and Jacob Huggins of Williamstown High School, who were honored as 2021 National Merit Scholarship finalists at last week’s Wood County Schools Board of Education meeting. It takes a lot of dedication and hard work to reach that point, especially given the past year’s challenges. Congratulations, folks!
THUMBS UP! Despite some disappointment, to Tuesday s primary. Six candidates incumbents David Horn and Chuck Kuhle, along with Ed Culp, Marty Watkins, Will Wetzel and Jacob Jenkins advanced

UP: To Gov. Jim Justice, for easing pandemic regulations and rules for restaurants, bars, businesses, grocery stores and schools in our state. Without taking his foot fully off the brakes, Justice appears to have given some hopes to business owners working to stay afloat after nearly a year under COVID-19 orders. Now it is up to the rest of us to stay vigilant, follow the remaining rules in place, wear our masks, practice social distancing, wash and sanitize our hands … and just generally use common sense in continuing to fight the spread of this virus.
UP: To Wood County Clerk Mark Rhodes, who in conjunction with Secretary of State Mac Warner, managed to remove approximately 5,200 abandoned registrations from the county’s voter rolls. “West Virginia’s voting rolls have never been cleaner and more accurate than they are today,” Warner said. “The dedication to accuracy from our county clerks while applying multi-agency list comparisons to track abandoned reg
