Rhode Island’s leadership in the offshore wind industry took another major step forward as joint-venture partners Ørsted and Eversource announced they are taking the first steps toward transforming ProvPort into a regional offshore wind hub.
The two companies announced that they will be developing a new advanced foundation component facility to support the assembly of the developers’ portfolio of Northeast offshore wind farms.
The new 228-foot long facility will be used for advanced fabrication and assembly of foundation platforms for Ørsted and Eversource’s offshore wind projects serving Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New York. A new memorandum of understanding creates a framework to negotiate participation of Maine labor in the construction of offshore wind in the Gulf of Maine.
New England Aqua Ventus LLC, or NEAV, and the Maine Building and Construction Trades Council, on behalf of itself and its affiliated local unions, yesterday announced they reached agreement on the memorandum.
NEAV is developing an offshore wind demonstration project near Monhegan with floating platform technology developed by the University of Maine.
The memorandum creates a framework that will lead to future negotiations of a project labor agreement and includes initiatives to bring new workers into the skilled trades to work on offshore wind, according to a news release.

The developer of a floating wind demonstration project off Monhegan Island has reached an agreement with organized labor unions that’s expected to lead to skilled workers being hired for hundreds of construction jobs in a burgeoning new industry.
During a news conference Wednesday in Portland, New England Aqua Ventus LLC and the Maine Building and Construction Trades Council announced that they have signed a memorandum of understanding regarding the role of Maine labor in offshore wind projects in the Gulf of Maine. The deal is among several being reached across the Eastern Seaboard for multiple projects
