INEC holds federal, state constituency bye-elections June 19 Published 8 May 2021 The Independent National Electoral Commission has fixed a date for bye-elections to fill the vacant Gwaram Federal Constituency in Jigawa State at the House of Representatives and the Sabon Gari State Constituency seat in the Kaduna State House of Assembly. The polls are to hold on June 19, 2021. The National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, INEC, Mr Festus Okoye, made this known in separate statements on Friday. In a statement titled, ‘Conduct of Bye-Election in Gwaram Federal Constituency of Jigawa State,’ INEC said it had received a communication from the National Assembly in which the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, declared the seat for the Gwaram Federal Constituency vacant, following the death of a member, Yuguda Hassan Kila, on March 4, 2021.

While the Gwaram Federal Constituency of Jigawa State became vacant following the demise of Yuguda Hassan-Kila on March 4, the Sabon Gari Constituency in Kaduna state became vacant due to the failure of its former occupant, Aminu Shagali, to attend one-third of the assembly meetings.

By John Shiklam The Kaduna State House of Assembly has declared the seat of its former Speaker, Hon. Aminu Abdullahi Shagali, vacant. Shagali was said to have been absent from the activities of the Assembly for more than a year without any reason. The decision to declare Shagali’s seat vacant was taken by the Assembly during a plenary session presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Dr. Isaac Auta Zankai, yesterday. The Assembly also extended the suspension of three of its members-Yusuf Liman (APC, representing Makera); Isah Hazo (APC, representing Basawa), Nuhu Goro Shadalafiya (APC, representing Kagarko), and Salisu Isa (APC, representing Magajin Gari) for another 12 months.
