As new cases and deaths of COVID-19 in the state and Jackson County remained relatively low, the Mississippi Gaming Commission announced this week that COVID some safety restrictions placed on casinos last year would end at 5 p.m. Friday. Mississippi casinos were ordered to close for two months after the COVID outbreak in Mississippi began, but were allowed to reopen on May 21, with safety protocols in place, including mandatory masks for all customers and employees, unless actively eating or drinking. With Thursday’s announcement by the commission, masks will no longer be a requirement inside casinos. Casinos are required to follow other state and local rules relative to the virus and are free to set their own guidelines.

Four Singing River Health System hospitals are the only Mississippi hospitals south of Jackson to earn an “A” rating for patient safety. The four facilities Singing River Hospital, Ocean Springs Hospital, Ochsner Medical Center - Hancock, and Singing River Gulfport Hospital all received top ratings for patient safety in the spring Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades, released Thursday. All four facilities are operated through a partnership between SRHS and Ochsner Health. The “A” grade signifies each of the hospitals achievement in protecting patients from errors, injuries, accidents and infections.

Two men killed in Ocean Springs crash Updated Apr 29, 2021; OCEAN SPRINGS, Mississippi Two men were killed when the vehicle in which they were passengers collided with another at the intersection of U.S. 90 and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard Wednesday night. According to Ocean Springs police Capt. Ryan LeMaire, officers responded to the scene at 10:37 p.m. Wednesday. Two men were declared dead at the scene 46-year-old Robert Dominguez of Tucker, Ga., and 36-year-old Jon Thomas of Ocean Springs. LeMaire said preliminary investigation indicates one of the vehicles was northbound on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and was attempting to turn west on to U.S. 90 when the other vehicle, which was eastbound on the highway, struck the first vehicle on the driver’s side.

Both Mississippi and Jackson County saw increases in the number of new cases of COVID-19 during the past week, marking the second consecutive week with increases, but deaths decreased statewide while vaccinations continued to increase. For the 7-day period ending Friday, the Mississippi Department of Health reported 1,612 new cases statewide 214 more than the previous week. Deaths, however, were down by 18 to 36. The state now totals 310,349 cases and 7,175 deaths. The increase was more drastic in Jackson County, where the number of new cases rose by more than 82% to 98. There were two COVID deaths in the past week after none the week prior. Jackson County now totals 13,254 cases and 245 deaths.

New cases and deaths due to COVID-19 continued to drop as the state health department reported that roughly 20% of Mississippi’s population is now fully vaccinated. Over the past week, 148,460 additional doses of vaccine were administered across the state, bringing the total to over 1.4 million. The Mississippi Department of Health reported Friday that 597,694 people had been fully vaccinated although it should be noted that at least a small percentage of those receiving vaccinations in Mississippi have come from other states.
