The fishing vessel Determination sank in Woods Hole off Penzance Point early Friday evening. The U.S. Coast Guard was notified the vessel was taking on water at 4:50 pm, according to Petty Officer Amanda Wyrick. Two 45 foot response boats from Station Woods Hole came to the vessel’s aid and safely recovered the crew, Wyrick said. The vessel sank by Buoy 11, Wyrick said. She could not confirm whether or not the vessel struck rocks. Mark Brown of Sea Tow US, Falmouth, responded to the scene and asked the crew what had happened.

Brian Becker has been around saltwater pretty much all his life, so it was a perfect fit when he became the owner of Sea Tow Eastern Long Island last November.
Mr. Becker has worked at Sea Tow, which occupies an office and dock space at Founders Landing in Southold, for more than 20 years, even while he was a full-time physical education teacher for grades K-12 on Shelter Island.
Last November he purchased the franchise. And, because he loves his students, he will continue to teach on Shelter Island. When he is not teaching, he can be found on the water.

A Sea Tow Services International survey of 3,500 boaters found that last-year’s pandemic-related increase in boating activity will continue this summer.
“Our member survey has typically been a very strong indicator for seasonal recreational boating trends,” Sea Tow president Kristen Frohnhoefer
. “Last year, Sea Tow saw a 34 percent increase in requests for on-water assistance in the summer of 2020, and our nationwide network of captains are anticipating another busy season for 2021.”
Sea Tow noted that in 2020, new-boat owners were 142 percent more likely to need ungrounding services, 108 percent were more likely to need fuel, and 11.2 percent were more likely to need a jumpstart.
