The U.S. Navy has refused to accept new Freedom-class Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) built by Lockheed Martin until the company fixes a flaw the service found in its combining gear.

Little Rock (LCS-9) ships. The system links the ship’s Rolls Royce MT30 gas turbines and Colt-Pielstick diesel engines, which power the main drive shaft to achieve 40-knot top speed, USNI News reported today.

Jan. 20 (UPI) The U.S. Navy has halted receipt of Freedom-class littoral combat ships from Lockheed Martin, citing a design flaw with potentially disastrous outcomes.
At issue is a major design flaw in the combining gear of the ship s transmission, a complex set of gears transferring power from its engines to its propulsion system.

The Program Executive Office for Ships is bracing for a range of new ship classes to join the fleet in the coming years and is taking steps to ensure the requirements and acquisition communities, and the industrial base, are ready for all the new work.
Advanced underwater vehicle for SOF will be manufactured for first export customer.
Teledyne Brown Engineering has received a $39.21 million contract modification from US Naval Sea Systems Command, to produce Mk11 Shallow Water Combat Submersibles for an unnamed FMS customer.
This marks the first export sale of the Mk11.
Work will be performed in Huntsville, Alabama, and is expected to be completed by September 2024.
The USN contracted Teledyne Brown in 2019 to develop the SWCS as part of a wider effort to develop new underwater transport platforms for elite commandos.
Shephard Defence Insight notes that the SWCS comprises a next-generation free-flooding combat submersible that transports SEAL teams and other SOF personnel, as well as their combat equipment in hostile waters for a variety of missions.
