Dear A&E,
Just after my girls were born, I opened a credit card in my name, without telling my husband and used it for little treats for them and, later, clothes for myself. Four years on, the debt has crept up to £13,000. My husband has no idea and I’m too ashamed to tell him. Now our mortgage is up for renewal, I’m terrified it will affect it and that he’ll find out. We’re not skint, but every penny is allocated so I’ve no idea how to pay it off. I also know I can’t bury my head in the sand any more.

Impulse buying is mostly emotional, and usually the result of some form of emotional distress. This could be issues around self-esteem, anxiety, sadness, or even boredom.
