Midland leaned into world-building on their new EP, complete with a big, thoughtful roll-out

By Syndicated Content Big Machine Records Midland’s The Last Resort EP arrives on Friday, and with it comes a quirky, detailed roll-out of the world that the band seeks to create with their new project. That includes a digital magazine that the band created to advertise their self-created Last Resort Hotel & Day Spa, complete with an infomercial starring the group’s backing guitarist, Luke Cutchen. “This infomercial has become all of our favorite part of this whole roll-out,” the band’s Cameron Duddy tells The band owes a fair bit of this return to their playful side to The Sonic Ranch, a documentary about their origin story that they dropped back in March. Revisiting those early days pushed the trio toward “getting nostalgic about where we’ve come from, and reconnecting as friends. So it all emanates from within,” Cameron adds.

Midland Checks Into The Last Resort on New EP

Midland takes another step forward in their sonic progression Friday as they release the five-song EP The Last Resort via Big Machine Records, marking their first project of new material in two years. “At the very beginning of 2020, we were like, Oh yeah, we ve got the third album in the bag. It’s done. We had songs that we couldn t fit on the second album. Writing for the second album was so strange, because we were in transit the whole time,” Duddy tells Billboard. But then the pandemic hit and those songs were replaced with new ones. “When we had to sit around for a year, we realized that the one thing that we truly loved to do was think about writing music and writing songs. We co-wrote probably 25 or 30 songs in the last year, he continues.
