Barrington Coronavirus Testing Site Will Stay Open 2 More Weeks

Reply A pop-up coronavirus testing site in Barrington will remain open for an additional two weeks. (Jenna Fisher/Patch) BARRINGTON, RI A pop-up asymptomatic COVID-19 testing site in Barrington will stay open for an additional two weeks, said Town Manager James Cunha in his weekly update Friday. The rapid testing site, located at the former Joseph A. Bank storefront in the Barrington Shopping Center, opened on Jan. 12 and was scheduled to remain open until Jan. 23. However, the site will now be offering tests through Feb. 6. The Barrington rapid testing site is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is being supported by Joe Paolino and Paolino Properties, the RI Department of Health, and the RI National Guard.

Gina Raimondo might be confirmed as commerce secretary.  In the Arena (7 a.m., Ch. 6)  Frank Picozzi, the newly elected Mayor of Warwick, joins Joe Paolino Jr. to discuss his grassroots campaign that led him to victory over an established Democratic candidate, and his top priorities for the city.  

Eddie Beard, RI painter who became congressman, dies at age 80

Eddie Beard was a symbol of that: a Providence housepainter who went to Congress. He walked the chamber with a brush in the breast pocket of his $50 suits, the only blue-collar rep in the late 1970s. When he lost in 1980 after three terms, he did not become a lobbyist or corporate guy. He ran a Central Falls tavern for six years, then headed elderly services for the City of Providence. Eddie  that’s what everyone called him was the real deal. Sadly, just shy of 81, he took his leave from us this week from the toll of Parkinson’s. I saw some of that when I was perhaps the last journalist to interview him.

His work as a principal at Thayer Junior/Senior High School in Winchester, N.H. was featured in an NBC movie, A Town Torn Apart based on the book Doc: The Story of Dennis Littky and His Fight for a Better School.
