FRONT-ROW SEAT: New film festival showcases Haudenosaunee visions
The free, virtual Haudenosaunee Filmmakers Festival will take place April 19-25
VICTOR Louise Herne, a Mohawk Clan Mother in the Bear Clan, muses when she considers the women’s movement, and its connections to the Haudenosaunee people.
“I remember growing up and listening to the grandmas, them hearing about feminism,” she says. “My grandma would say, ‘We’re not feminists – we re the law.”
It’s a moment of humor in Mohawk filmmaker Katsitsionni Fox’s film ”Without a Whisper: Konnon:kwe” about the women’s rights movement’s often unheralded roots in the matrilineal Haudenosaunee society – and a moment of truth. (Seguin) – Texas Lutheran opens the revamped Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s basketball tournament Friday as the host of a quarterfinal matchup with the University of St. Thomas at Jim Shuler Court/ Memorial Gym.
The SCAC altered the format of the men’s and women’s basketball championships to play the quarterfinal, semifinal, and championship rounds over three separate weekends, with the higher tournament seed hosting each game.
Mohamed Patel who was named Qube Learning Apprentice of the Year A father of two from Blackburn has been named Adult Apprentice of the Year . Mohamed Patel undertook a Level 2 Customer Service Practitioner Apprenticeship at the company DHL Supply Chain and his achievements were recognised by Qube Learning. Joining the business in 2013 in a temporary position, Mohamed took on a more permanent role as an Administrator in 2015. Mohamed said “I was absolutely thrilled just to be nominated but to go on to win the Adult Apprentice of the Year 2020 the feeling is beyond amazing, and feels wonderful to have been awarded this special honour after all the sacrifice and hard work it took to complete the course.
