The North Cedar Avenue Streetscape project was approved by the Owatonna City Council in November 2019, and after a lot of assessments, the general planning framework is done.
The project focuses on the three blocks between Central Park and Rose Street. One goal of these renovations is to increase ADA accessibility and pedestrian safety through the expansion of sidewalks.
In addition, the project is looking to add more energy-efficient street lighting while also beautifying the area by planting trees (about eight per block on each side of the street) and seating throughout the street to enhance the user s experience.
Traffic Signal Change in Owatonna
Road construction season is upon us. One project in Owatonna will feature the removal of a traffic light at Main Street and Lincoln Avenue. The intersection will become a four-way stop, and in fact, was switched to an all-way red-flashing signal in December. The traffic signal will reportedly be removed at some point in April.
In a news release from the Steele County Highway Department, the county and they City of Owatonna recently completed a signal justification report for this intersection that concluded the intersection does not have the vehicle and pedestrian traffic volume requirements needed to justify a signal.
