Governor Kate Brown directs state agencies to align K-12 mask guidance with CDC recommendations to prevent disruptions to return to in-person instruction Governor Kate Brown today directed the Oregon Health Authority and the Oregon Department of Education to create a rule to require masks indoors for K-12 schools statewide for the 2021-22 school year, in line with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recently updated guidance, and based on the latest science on the spread of the Delta variant. “The science and data are clear: the Delta variant is in our communities, and it is more contagious,” said Governor Brown. “My priority is to ensure our kids are able to safely return to full-time in-person learning this fall, five days per week and with minimal disruptions. With many children still ineligible to be vaccinated, masks are an effective way to help keep our kids safe in the classroom, the learning environment we know serves them best.

State officials said they are following the lead of Israel, which announced Thursday that the country would offer a third COVID-19 booster shot for fully vaccinated people over the age of 60.

Schools still undecided about classroom masking policies had the rules made for them with Governor Brown s announcement. Masks will be required indoors in K-12 schools. Credit Tiffany Eckert Eugene’s Bethel School District was undecided about whether or not to require masks when classes start in September. On Wednesday, spokesperson Alisha Dodds said they’ve been consulting with Bethel nursing staff and state and local health officials.
