In response to the Delta variant’s rampant spread, the Oregon Health Authority this week recommended universal mask use in public, indoor settings. Thursday, Governor Kate Brown directed the Department of Education to create a rule to require masks for all K -12 schools.
Schools still undecided about classroom masking policies had the rules made for them with Governor Brown s announcement. Masks will be required indoors in K-12 schools.

Eugene’s Bethel School District was undecided about whether or not to require masks when classes start in September. On Wednesday, spokesperson Alisha Dodds said they’ve been consulting with Bethel nursing staff and state and local health officials.

KLCC s Tiffany Eckert reports on upcoming vax clinics for Eugene s Bethel School District students, 12 and up.
Bethel School District has been actively vaccinating eligible students against coronavirus. Upcoming vax clinics will focus on the newest approved age group, 12 to 14 year olds in middle school.

Brooke Cottle is director of the Bethel Health Center. They’re managing the student vax clinics. She said the local response to vaccinating tweens and young teens has been positive.
“I’ve had students who have said they are very excited to get their vaccine for protecting their family member, they’ve got someone at risk. And others who just really want to get back to normal life.”
