BIRMINGHAM, AL The Birmingham Police Department announced this week that retired police officer Randall Versie Smith has died. Smith recently suffered a fall at his home resulting in his hospitalization, and ultimately succumbed to those injuries Monday.
Smith began his career with the Birmingham Police Department on January 4, 1988. On March 22, 1995, Smith along with other officers responded to a domestic dispute in Ensley. While responding to the call, Smith rescued a toddler during a domestic incident involving a person with a gun.On this call Smith was accidently wounded by the gunfire of a fellow officer.
