Funding should be found to install wheelchair swings in local playgrounds, Laois County Councillor James Kelly has demanded.
Cllr Kelly made the appeal in a motion at the latest Borris in Ossory Mountmellick Municipal District meeting. He said that Laois County Council, as part of its ethos of inclusiveness, provide funding to install wheelchair swings in the playgrounds of this Municipal District.

The cost of paying for a new playground in Borris-in-Ossory will have to be covered from ‘external sources’ but Laois County council will assist the community in reaching the goal.
Ms Ann Marie Maher, Sport & Leisure Officer, updated Cllr John King and other councillors for the village recently on the Borris-in-Ossory Development Association driven project which will be located to the rear of St Canice s Church and not far from St Joseph s NS. It will be beside the church car park.
Hope of summer reopening for Laois leisure centres

The Laois County Council chief is hopeful of a summer reopening for both Portlaoise and Portarlington public leisure centres.
CEO John Mulholland has expressed hope that they can reopen in summer under shared management, if the public health advice on Covid-19 allows it.
“Any level from 1 to 5 of Covid does not provide any kind of optimism to reopening leisure centres. We are very much at the whim of public health advice and progress with vaccinations and other public health measures. We don’t have wisdom or knowledge in relation to when you could possibly open a leisure centre or swimming pool to large members of the public.
