The 2021-2022 season will mark the 91st year of live Saturday broadcasts and will again be heard over the Toll Brothers–Metropolitan Opera International Radio Network. The Metropolitan Opera made the extremely difficult decision to cancel the entirety of the 2020–21 season, based on the advice of health officials who advise the Met and Lincoln Center. In the meantime, they are pleased to be able to announce the Met s 2021–22 season, which will open September 27, 2021, with the Met premiere of Terence Blanchard s Fire Shut up in my Bones the first opera by a Black composer to be performed at the Met. Note: Most programs start at 11 a.m. Mountain /1 p.m. Eastern

Metropolitan Opera - Otello

Metropolitan Opera Ken Howard Sonya Yoncheva as Desdemona and Aleksandrs Antonenko in the title role of Verdi s Otello . The 2020-21 Metropolitan Opera Radio Broadcast season continues with Otello, Verdi’s masterful re-telling of Shakespeare’s tragedy, conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin in a performance from 2015. Tenor Aleksandrs Antonenko starred in the title role as the military hero torn apart by jealousy, and soprano Sonya Yoncheva was Desdemona, his innocent wife. Baritone Željko Lučić sang Iago, the officer who aims to destroy both of them through treachery and cunning. Maestro Nézet-Séguin led the Met Orchestra and Chorus in Verdi’s tempestuous, towering final drama.

It starred Swedish soprano Nina Stemme and Australian tenor Stuart Skelton, both acclaimed for their performances in the towering title roles, as the couple consumed by an illicit and overpowering love. Bass René Pape sang the betrayed King Marke, mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Gubanova was Brangäne, who delivers the potion that seals the lovers’ fate, and bass-baritone Evgeny Nikitin was Tristan’s friend and protector, Kurwenal. Maestro Rattle conducted the Met Orchestra in Wagner’s groundbreaking and epically romantic score.
