Gregory Odom Jr. had held in his emotions long enough. The wave finally crested. He signed his scorecard, bent down next to the push cart that held his navy Howard University Bison bag, put his hand over his face, and finally let some of the hurt go.
His coach, Sam Puryear, rubbed Odom’s back to comfort him.
Odom, 20, was on the grounds playing his first practice round at the PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship at TPC Sawgrass on Saturday when Puryear had to tell him that his father, Greg Odom Sr., had passed away back home in Memphis, Tennessee. Odom Sr., 67, had been admitted to hospice a day earlier, his kidney failing him. The son, miles away in Florida, conferred by telephone with his mother and knew there was one thing his dad would want him to do: Play.

A journalist and member of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has claimed on Twitter that she did not confuse British Oscar-winner Daniel Kaluuya with American actor and singer Leslie Odom Jr during a press conference at Sunday’s Academy Awards. #DanielKaluuya I did not mistake you for Leslie Odom Jnr, tweeted Margaret Gardiner on Monday. I m sorry if it seemed that way. I had wanted to ask about Regina King not being nominated as a director for
One Night in Miami ., and your win for
Judas and the Black Messiah for the community at this time.

Gardiner took to social media on Monday to slam reports that she had confused Kaluuya to Odom, writing, “Daniel Kaluuya, I did not mistake you for Leslie Odom Jr. I’m sorry if it seemed that way. I had wanted to ask about Regina King not being nominated as a director for ‘One Night in Miami,’ and your win for ‘Judas and the Black Messiah’ for the community at this time.”
Black Panther starâs moment took a turn as he was seemingly confused with fellow nominee Odom Jr. The moment went viral, leading to the journalist denying the mistake.
For Daniel Kaluuya, the Oscars was a night filled with excitement and some TMI. While Hollywoodâs biggest night was a little different, the tradition of the after-win press conference still happened (virtually, of course). Daniel Kaluuyaâs press conference went smoothly until the Leslie Odom Jr. snafu with one member of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association occurred. Check out the viral exchange below:
