The health sector gets a 19% hike in allocation; education and skill development are provided a record Rs 24,370 crore while the combined spending on agriculture and irrigation stands at over Rs 25,000 crore. Primacy has been accorded to better access to drinking water as piped supply has been given a whopping Rs 12,000 crore.

This year’s budget is expected to be around Rs 1.70 lakh crore, more than last year’s BHUBANESWAR: Even as the Odisha Economic Survey has predicted a contraction of the state’s economy in view of Covid-19, finance minister Niranjan Pujari is expected to present a growth-oriented budget of Rs 1.70 lakh crore for the 2021-22 financial year on Monday. Healthcare, agriculture and allied sectors, infrastructure, education and skill development, tourism and social welfare are likely to get a sizeable allocation in the state budget. “Though managing the Covid-19 pandemic is still our top priority, we have also taken up large health sector projects like construction of medical colleges and teaching hospitals in various districts and upgrade of the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. The state government will continue to earmark adequate funds for these projects,” a senior government official said.

Besides, tourism and sports also got the highest-ever allocation in the Budget. Presenting the Budget in the Assembly, Pujari said economy was showing signs of recovery and the state government was expecting to see a growth of about 10 per cent by end of the current year. In a first, the budget was tabled in the assembly through an electronic system using the National e-Vidhan Application (NeVA).

Mr. Pujari has ensured that the Naveen Patnaik government’s all flagship projects Puri Heritage Corridor, Lingaraj and Samaleswari temple beautification programmes, SCB Medical College development and Kalia (Krushak Assistance for Livelihood and Income Augmentation) do not face fund shortage.
