Native American painter Brent Learned merges his tribal culture with Pop art sensibilities
Oklahoman
A self-proclaimed mama s boy, Brent Learned was entering his senior year at the University of Kansas when he asked his mother what he could do to make her proud. She goes, Well, son, I m already proud of you, but if you re asking to make me more proud, I would really appreciate it if you would paint your culture, said Learned, a member of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma. So, I started doing Native American paintings, and then from there, I kind of discovered other Native American artists. . The way I look at it is I m telling my ancestors story . and I feel like I m keeping their voice alive through my art.
