Pet food manufacturer Midwestern Pet Foods Inc. is expanding a voluntary recall it initiated in December for dog and cat food made at its Chickasha, OK plant that exceeded acceptable limits of Aflatoxin, a toxin made by a type of mold on corn and other grains.
Midwestern Pet Foods issued the first recall for several lots of its Sportmix brand dog and cat food on December 30 after several reports of deaths and illnesses in dogs emerged. US company Midwestern Pet Foods has recalled five of its products after it caused the deaths of over 70 animals and illnesses in others.
On December 30, the company recalled its Sportmix products. In a release, it said this was “due to tests indicating levels of Aflatoxin that exceed acceptable limits.
It explained, “Aflatoxin is a toxin produced by the mold Aspergillus flavus, which can grow on corn and other grains used as ingredients in pet food. At high levels, aflatoxin can cause illness and death in pets.

Midwestern Pet Food, Inc. has expanded its recall of certain pet food products after more than 70 dogs died and 80 fell ill from eating the affected products, which contained potentially fatal levels of aflatoxins.
The family-owned business, based in Evansville, Indiana, said in a statement on Wednesday that the recall has been expanded to now include pet food products from their Sportmix, Pro Pac Originals, Splash, Sportstrail, and Nunn Better dry dog and cat food brands. The recalled products were produced in the company s Oklahoma Kitchen and have an expiration date on or before July 9, 2022. The facility identifier for the Oklahoma Kitchen, which can be found at the end of the date code on recalled products, is 05.
