Police: Citizens detained rape suspect until police arrived

CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - The Chatham County Police Department has arrested a suspect after a woman was reportedly attacked and sexually assaulted inside a Berwick grocery store on Tuesday, April 27.

Gregory Hathorne, 25, has been charged with felony rape, felony kidnapping and misdemeanor battery.
Chatham County officers were called to the Kroger grocery store located on Ogeechee Road in the Berwick area at approximately 6:30 p.m. to respond to a sexual assault.
The victim, an adult female, told police she was attacked and raped by a stranger in the Kroger restroom. Chatham County Police Chief Jeff Hadley says the victim and suspect had no prior contact and that the suspect was new to the area.

Chatham County police are investigating an alleged sexual assault at the Berwick Kroger.
Police responded at the Kroger grocery store on Ogeechee Road in the Berwick area at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday after the victim, an adult woman, said she was attacked and sexually assaulted in the Kroger restroom by a stranger, according to a statement from CCPD.
She was transported to an area hospital and is receiving services from the Rape Crisis Center.
Police have charged 25-year-old Gregory Hathorne with felony rape, felony kidnapping and misdemeanor battery. He is being held at the Chatham County Detention Center.
During a Wednesday afternoon press conference, CCPD Chief Jeff Hadley said Hathorne has very little history here in Savannah.
