Knox County Schools got the greenlight from the Tennessee Department of Education to open three virtual schools for the 2021-2022 school year, the district announced Monday afternoon.
These students will be virtual-only for the entirety of the school year. Families were required to sign up for virtual school by May 14.
Students will have to un-enroll from their current school to be at one of the virtual schools. The schools plan to have extracurriculars and clubs but not sports.
The district will not be allowed to move individual schools to virtual-only temporarily. That flexibility was helpful for schools as they battled attendance issues and COVID-19 cases throughout the last school year.
