The Northerner | Norse Violence Prevention Center hosts Take Back The Night

April 14, 2021 The Norse Violence Prevention Center (NVPC) Peer Ambassadors hosted a two-part “Take Back The Night” event Tuesday evening. About 20 people virtually attended the first part of the event that featured speaker Olivia Montgomery who serves as the equity and inclusion coordinator at the Ohio Alliance to End Sexual Violence, as well as own an equity firm, discussed the intersection between gender and racial justice, and how students have a vital role in gender and civil rights movements.  According to Montana State University, “Take Back The Night” events have been hosted since 1877 when a women-only protest in England took place against the violence and terror that women felt as they walked the streets at night.

Third of sexual assaults on university students go unreported - study

Research showing one third of university students who are sexually assaulted don t report it is a conservative figure, a sexual abuse survivors group says. A study by Te Whare Tāwharau, the University of Otago’s Sexual Violence Support and Prevention Centre, published in the New Zealand Medical Journal, the first since 1991, found 28 percent of the 1500 students surveyed reported sexual assault, including 15 percent who reported rape. A lot of people who were assaulted knew the person who assaulted them and lived with them and had to continue living with them for the remainder of the year and a lot of us didn t want to speak out, or brushed over it completely and trivialised the assault because of the culture of the university.
