Guam students place in National Japan Bowl

Students from St. John s School placed third in Level 4 of the National Japan Bowl, which was held virtually this year, according to advisor Fumiko Harada.
The school has participated in the contest since 2004, the highest score of which came in 2012, when then-high school students Franklin Lee, Allyson Chiu, and Dominique Ong, competed in Level 2 and placed fifth.
Now, captain Rachel Seo, Felix Gong, and Olivia Kang placed third nationally.
Two of the three team members competed in the virtual islandwide science fair at the same time. According to Harada, the two students prepared for the competition 15 minutes before the live Japan Bowl contest.

The Pleasanton-based José Maria Amador chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution held its annual student awards ceremony Feb. 13 via Zoom to recognize 13 students who took part in its 2020 programs.
Shreya Balasubramanian, a senior at Dougherty Valley High School in San Ramon, won the DAR Good Citizen Award for demonstrating qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. Jacqueline Martin of Dublin High and Mia Rodriquez of California High in San Ramon were awarded honorable mention.
Students celebrated the Year of the Ox at Celebrasia, a virtual Lunar New Year event on Saturday hosted by the Chinese Students Association and the Taiwanese American Students Club.
Celebrasia, an annual event, typically features professional and student performances. Since it was moved online this year to accommodate pandemic restrictions, student groups performed in masks or shared pre-recorded and edited videos.
“We’re celebrating the Lunar New Year and bringing Asian American culture to campus,” CSA president and McCormick senior Olivia Cong said. “Asian American representation is really important as well and being able to show these prominent Asian American acts to our community is definitely a big part of celebration.”
