For the first time in history, the Olympic games won’t have spectators and winners will place their medals around their necks themselves.
Back in September 2013, when Japan was awarded the 2020 Olympics, then Prime Minister Shinzo Abe wanted them to crown a period of extended growth and prosperity. Japan was recovering from Fukushima, the 2011 disaster which killed over 18,000 after an earthquake and tsunami triggered a nuclear meltdown.

Yang Qian sat just 0.2 points from a gold medal and uncorked her worst shot of the finals.
No way a 9.8 was going to be enough to overtake Anastasiia Galashina.
Turns out, it was - by a long shot.
Yang won the first gold medal of the Tokyo Games on Thursday, setting an Olympic record in 10-meter air rifle with 251.8 points despite a shaky final shot. Nina Christen of Switzerland took bronze.

TOKYO: The Tokyo Olympic torch relay is being pulled off the streets in Hiroshima prefecture as coronavirus (Covid-19) cases rise in Japan barely 10 weeks before the opening ceremony.
Hiroshima Governor Hidehiko Yuzaki said that a ceremony next week without the relay is likely to still take place. This is at least the sixth change to the relay from rerouting to cancellation in the last several weeks.
Organisers warned before the relay began that changes and delays were expected in the face of the pandemic.

TOKYO, May 11, (AP): The Tokyo Olympic torch relay is being pulled off the streets in Hiroshima prefecture as COVID-19 cases rise in Japan barely 10 weeks before the opening ceremony. Hiroshima Governor Hidehiko Yuzaki said that a ceremony next week without the relay is likely to still take place. This is at least the sixth change to the relay – from rerouting to cancellation – in the last several weeks. Organizers warned before the relay began that changes and delays were expected in the face of the pandemic. “It is certain there will be no relay on public streets since we are all trying to reduce going out, and how to do the ceremony without the relay on the streets is still being discussed with the organizers,” Yuzaki said Monday.
