Man jailed for drunken, unprovoked attack on his friend

Ryan Steer, 21, of Unity Street, Chippenham, appeared at Swindon Crown Court today for sentencing. He had previously pleaded guilty to Section 20 grievous bodily harm and assault by beating. In the early hours of 23 November last year Steer was with friends, drinking at a flat in Unity Street. Steer then got into an argument with his victim, a man in his 20s, over the fact that Steer wanted to take his bank card to buy more alcohol. Unprovoked, Steer punched his victim to the floor, before kicking him to the head and face multiple times. The victim sustained multiple fractures to his face and needed surgery to install metal plates.

The DePaulia | The difference between reform, defund and abolish

May 2, 2021 Marching footsteps and thunderous voices crowded the streets of cities nationwide last May after the murder of George Floyd. Anguish and outrage propelled the Black Lives Matter movement forward in a way it hadn’t been seen since its start.  Politicians and law enforcement were forced to come face to face with a message they tried, for decades, to ignore: police violence is a direct result of systemic racism in policing.  Solutions for addressing systemic racism in policing came in a variety of forms and were more popularly discussed under three categories: reform, defund and abolish. Though these solutions all advocate for changing the face of policing as we know it, these terms became a source of confusion, misinterpretation and dispute.
